Stop the Press, it’s madness out there!  Focus on Quality, Create a WOW, children’s book Reading Experience

Book publishers appear to be addicted to churning out low quality books by the bakers dozen.  We are overwhelmed with new titles jam-packed on the shelves.  It’s madness out there!

I watched with delight as my young niece, “had to have,” that new title, only to read the book once.  She thrust it aside, discarded under her bed.  I inquired, “why?” To which she said, “It is of no interest, a poorly told story.” Flabbergasted I picked the book up and studied it from cover to cover.  She was right; it now gathers dust hidden away, a waste of a tree, a short magazine article at most.

This led me to examine the children’s books my wife and I had collected.  The Authors we adore saved over the years.  There was Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carol, Charles Dickens, Kenneth Grahame and Aesop’s Fables, to name just a few.  Beautifully written and illustrated bedtime stories a chapter or tale a night.  How I remember the stories as if read yesterday, the memories of sheer delight.

One book caught my attention for written inside was, To Cheri from Aunt… and Uncle …October 31, 1965. It wasn’t the date, my wife’s birthday that surprised, but the condition of the book it was worn and tattered, obviously well read , yet the binding and hard cover were intact.  On further examination, it was Smyth sewn; the signatures threads were all intact.  The Color images were bright and clear.  The book was forty-five years young, not old, ready for the next generation.

So let us ask a few unsettling questions; will your book’s binding last the test of time?  Is it worthy of the tale, or perhaps more to the point, is the tale worthy of being a book, or is it just a magazine story?  Is it going to WOW, not just tomorrow, but for years to come?

Now many people would lay this travesty at the Author and Illustrators feet, but clearly, it is the industry, from the Publishers, Printers to the Books stores and Distributers and the Critics, who are to blame.  It’s a public rip-off of biblical size!

We as the Authors and Illustrators of children’s books need to deliver a great manuscript with incredible images that delight, Agent or not, there is another tale in its self, worthy of a blog.  Equally, Publishers and Printers need to give each project the time, resources, experience and commitment to create the masterpiece that lies hidden in the words.

So how do I find a good book these days?  I read independent book reviews by other book lovers like me, here are a few; The True Book Addict, Historical Fiction Connection, Ezine articles and The Elegant Variation, just to name a few.

As a team, we need to create a WOW that brings joy, which exceeds expectations, to all our book readers.
